The Blackberry Storm

March 19, 2009

i get asked all the time what I think about the Blackberry Storm, RIM’s attempt to copy the iPhone (along with every other company’s attempts to copy the iPhone). Okay, here’s all I have to say about the Blackberry Storm:

FIRST AND FOREMOST: THE BLACKBERRY STORM DOESN’T HAVE WIFI!! Okay, let’s just keep that point first and foremost in our mind here. This device will NOT surf any high-speed wireless network like the iPhone will. You are forced to pay Verizon to use their slower cellular network to surf the Internet and check your email. Why? Because Verizon wants it that way… to make more money for themselves. That was one of the reasons they initially turned down the iPhone.

Okay, if that isn’t enough to dissuade you from purchasing the Blackberry Storm, let me point you to a handful of reviews about the Blackberry Storm:

New York Times reviews BlackBerry Storm: “I’ve got a better name for it: BlackBerry Dud”

TIME Magazine reviews BlackBerry Storm: “Novelty screen feels cheap; steer clear of this storm”

Chicago Tribune reviews BlackBerry Storm: “Can’t compete with Apple’s iPhone”

PC World reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: “Awkward, disappointing; a failed experiment”

InformationWeek reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: “Tiresome, slow, severe bugginess and problems”

Gizmodo reviews BlackBerry Storm: “Heavy, laggy, sluggish, unstable, clunky, and tiring”

Engadget reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: “Frustrating, inelegant, uncomfortable; a disappointment”

Innovation Professor reviews RIM BlackBerry Storm: “Disappointing and awful”

MAY 2009 update:

This blog entry isn’t the place for me to be listing the hundreds of positive reviews for the iPhone. I do a tiny bit of that here. But it would be interesting to point out this news story: “J.D. Power: Apple iPhone ranks highest in smartphone customer satisfaction”

Scott, how can this be? I heard that the Storm will be striking back against the Iphone this year finally. They finally have an exact copy of the original Iphone! I think this has to all be wrong, Scott. Isn’t it true, as Verizon’s chief says, that Steve Jobs is in fact a mortal human being, and may in fact get old one day? Why IS APPLE COVERING THAT UP? Why isn’t Apple telling us the truth about the possibility of Steve Jobs possibly aging like the rest of us?!? And why are they keeping so much of their cash??

    Hahaha… hilarious, man.

And so true about Apple’s stockpile of cash — HOW DARE THEY save up for a rainy day? (Last I checked, it was storming cats & dogs in this country.)
